what to do when you have a bad boss

What to Do When You Have a Bad Boss

Have you ever watched the movie, Horrible Bosses?  If not, you should because it is a pretty funny movie.  The three main characters have three separate bosses who make their lives miserable.  As a last resort, they decide to get rid of them. Here is a short clip, which will give you a taste of one of these bad bosses. Hopefully, you have never had a boss like this one, but I am sure you have probably had at least one or two bad bosses throughout your career. I know I have. I have been blessed to have worked for some exceptional leaders who mentored me and helped me throughout my career. On the flip side, I’ve had several supervisors that caused me to dread coming to work.  According to Gallup, over 50% of employees who leave their job do so because of their supervisor.  In other words, because of a bad boss. Are you working for that kind of boss right now?  If so, there are several important factors to keep in mind, which will help you survive and maybe even thrive. sleep your way to success

Sleep Your Way to Success

A good night’s sleep is priceless. I think most people would agree with that statement.  However, do you believe it enough to apply that statement to your life and the lives of those you lead? If you do, your health, your outlook on life and your ability to lead will improve dramatically. Police officers work long hours, extra duty jobs and work schedules that may not be conducive to a good night’s sleep. Shift work and a lack of sleep can take a toll on the health of officers and contribute to poor performance. Some specialized assignments have demanding schedules, which cause poor sleep patterns for those officers assigned to the positions. As a Detective with the Marietta Police Department, I worked many long hours and operated long periods of time with little sleep.  I worked 66 hours overtime in one week working a homicide case where a child was killed.  Although that case was a bit unusual, it is a representative sample of the type…

climb the mountain of failure to find success

Climb the Mountain of Failure to Find Success

According to Rashida Rowe, “The road to success is paved with failure.” I believe most of us would agree with that statement because we have experienced a lot of failure on our way to success. Yet it can be easy to overlook the past obstacles and failures overcome by other successful people when we see them today. Take Abraham Lincoln for example.  His path to the Presidency was paved with failure.  He ran for office several times and lost.  He failed in business and even had a nervous breakdown.  But when we look back at his life, we only see him as a successful President, maybe the best one ever. Most successful people stumble along their way, and it is easy to forget that simple truth when we are experiencing our failure. What does failure look like for law enforcement leaders? Failure can take on many forms.  The obvious one would be a failure to get a promotion. Have you ever sought a promotion and didn’t get it? I know I have. Another failure might be not getting that internal assignment to a specialized unit that you had your heart set on. Been there, done that. The list could go…
