Opportunities Still Exist for Police Chief Candidates Who are Not Willing to Relocate

Last week, I wrote about the top advantages for police chief candidates who are willing to relocate for a police chief opportunity. See Related Post:  3 Major Advantages to Being Willing to Relocate for a Police Chief Job These reasons are important and valid.  But, all is not lost if you are not able or willing to relocate. This week, I want to touch on several advantages to staying local. Examples Here are a few examples of police chief candidates who sought out local police chief opportunities and succeeded in their work. On April 3, 2005, Deputy Chief Ken Ball of the Marietta Police Department retired and was sworn in as the Chief of Police of the Holly Springs Police Department.  Holly Springs is located in the adjacent county to Marietta.  Chief Ball served with distinction for over 11 years before retiring in 2016. Chief Gary Yandura served as the College Park Chief of Police for nine years beginning in 2001.  In 2013, Chief Yandura was appointed as the Police Chief of the Hiram Police Department.  He served until being appointed as the Chief of Police of the Brookhaven Police Department.  Chief Yandura had the opportunity to start the Brookhaven…

3 Major Advantages of Being Willing to Relocate For a Police Chief Job

One of the first decisions you have to make as a candidate for police chief is whether you are willing to relocate for the job.  Are you ready to move across the state or even across the country for your new job?  Are you willing to uproot your family for a new opportunity? The answer for many is yes and for others is no. I live within 20 miles of where I was born and where I have lived all of my life.  I never really considered relocating for a job. The Dunwoody Police Chief Job was attractive because it provided an opportunity to start a department from scratch and I would not have to relocate for the job. Of course, I do have some brutal commutes some days. A few years ago I was reading through a police chief job advertisement for Lynchburg, Virginia.  The opportunity was very attractive.  I’m not sure if it was the advertisement that did it for me or the beauty and location of the city.  Regardless, I wistfully contemplated applying for the position. In the end, I was not willing to move, so I did not apply. Even though I wasn’t willing to relocate,…

How a Bad Experience Renting a Vehicle Provides Important Lessons for Law Enforcement Leaders

I have always believed that law enforcement can improve their relationship with the communities they serve if every police officer treats each call for service as though it is the most important call of the day. Having this attitude can be a big challenge for most officers. The call may be the most traumatic event that has ever happened to the caller although but just a “routine” call for the police officer.  Many of the calls for service come are from people calling the police for the first time. You only get one chance to make a good first impression.  Take advantage of that first interaction. A contributing factor that makes it worse is the fact that police departments have a monopoly on the service they provide.  Unhappy or poorly treated “customers” have little recourse.  In most cases, callers can’t just call another department. How It All Began I attend Vertical Life Church in Dallas, GA.  At the time you read this, 25 of us will be in Allen, SD, which is one of the poorest, if not the poorest, cities in America.  Allen is on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The majority of the team flew out, but one…
